Shipments of MacBooks, iMacs and other Macs during the third quarter of 2022 grew 40.2% year-over-year.
Windows PC makers shipments all dropped in the same time period, so Apple’s share of global market for traditional computers increased substantially.
Macs are flying off the shelves
A dramatic increase in Mac shipments is undoubtedly good news, but the growth is partially caused by the company catching up with demand it was unable to meet earlier in the year. In Q2 2022, Mac shipments dropped 20% as COVID lockdowns in China hurt production. But customers were clearly willing to wait.
And the launch of the 2022 MacBook Air likely buoyed shipments too. The Air is Apple’s most affordable laptop and traditionally the best-selling. The new model got a substantially improved design and the speedy new M2 processor.
With those two factors in its favor, Apple shipped 10.1 million Macs in the September quarter, according to the market-researcher firm IDC. That’s a substantial change from the mere 4.7 million MacBooks, iMacs, Mac minis, etc. that shipped in Q2 of this year. And it’s up from 7.2 million in Q3 of last year.
