Through the medium of log files from third-party app developers you can see several leaks from Apple as employees test the new macOS-powered hardware; the hardware that will ship with the presumptively-named M2 Apple Silicon chipsets. Of course just because a device is being tested is no guarantee that the device will actually reach the market. Yet the range of devices being tested match up with the M1-powered portfolio, so it’s a fair assumption that what we’re looking at is an upgrade path that is essentially “same again but a bit bigger”.
And that means Apple’s awkward MacBook Pro is going to be with us for another two years.
Launched alongside the Apple Silicon powered MacBook Air and Mac Mini in 2020, the entry-level MacBook Pro allowed Tim Cook and his team to promote the then-new ARM-based M1 platform as being all things to all people, with a desktop, a consumer laptop, and a pro laptop, all available at launch. While the Mac Mini and the MacBook Air continue to have an easily defined place in the portfolio, the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro sits awkwardly.
